Are you tired of answering your parent’s question of “When are you going to be home?”

Is your roommate’s dirty laundry cramping your style? (And maybe your stomach?)

Maybe you and your new spouse are ready to settle down and start a family.

There’s no better time to begin the journey of home ownership than now. Buying your first home can be very nerve racking. After all, you will have to master the “R” word. That’s right, RESPONSIBLE!

But don’t let the “R” word scare you. The road to home ownership is an exciting rite of passage. You should be proud to accept the responsibility of stepping out on your own. Besides your car, this is the only other avenue you can use to be totally free. Almost.

There are still laws and regulations you have to obey, but there are no parental or landlord rules to follow, and no paper thin walls to hear your neighbors through.

You will have to give a little in order to have those freedoms, though. You will no longer have someone to call for a repair in the middle of the night—that person is you. You also won’t be able to ignore the ever growing grass. Yup, you’ll have to mow, too. Everything you relied on someone else to fix/do/pay for is all on your shoulders now. But, it’s worth it.

Once you sign papers for a mortgage, you are no longer “throwing money away.” Before home ownership, you were paying a landlord and never saw one cent of your money in return. With a home, you begin to build equity. The earlier you begin with home ownership, the more equity you accumulate over time and that’s a good thing!

And, in most circumstances you are able to deduct mortgage interest on your tax refund and write off home improvements you make. Don’t take my word for it though; consult your tax advisor before making any financial investment. Finally, when it’s time for you to upgrade to a bigger home, the equity you invested in your home will help with a down payment on your next home.

So, here’s how to begin the process: First, contact the BWCU Real Estate department at 316.558.5005 to get pre-qualified in your “First Time Buyer” program. Next, find a realtor you trust to help you begin shopping for your new home. And last—Happy house hunting!
