Greensburg, green trees, Green Account shirts, and a gleaming green party bus are just a few ways to describe last weekend’s community service project.  However, green was not the only color we saw in Greensburg, KS. Brown barren land where houses once stood, two gray stairways that at one time led to the second level of a community building, and a ruptured red brick wall were some of the other colors we saw there. This goes to say, hearing about and seeing documentaries on TV do not compare to physically standing in the middle of the devastation.

But for the community of Greensburg and those of BWCU, the story does not end there.
Approximately 60 people joined in the effort of planting trees in Greensburg over the weekends of Oct. 4th and Oct. 25th. Between the two trips, a total of 207 trees were planted in the Greensburg area.

We came equipped with dozens of shovels, buckets, two augers (we were so thankful for the augers!), bags of mulch, gloves, plenty of hydration, and an earnest desire to help rebuild the tangible town as well as the hearts of Greensburg.

In fact, we were so earnest to help, we finished planting the trees two hours earlier than planned on the weekend of Oct. 25th! With the extra time, we were able to visit the recently built, entirely green, lead platinum certification – 5.4.7 community arts center and the deepest hand-dug well in the United States. Needless to say, the trip was filled with both hard work and plenty of fun.

My employment at BWCU is recent, but I am already finding this organization is one that talks the talk and walks the walk. It is one that takes community service seriously and not as a means to achieve a good reputation to the public.

If you did not get the opportunity of going out to Greensburg this fall, I would encourage you to go with us in the spring! Do your part – Go Green.
