BWCU is committed to community service.  The “Family” philosophy of the credit union considers community service absolutely necessary.  It would benefit any and all companies to emphasize community service to its employees because service is what creates community.

If every citizen was involved in some kind of service to their community, a lot of community issues would be rendered obsolete.  For example, if one person on every residential street committed to keeping that street free from litter, we would have litter-free streets.  If one other person on every residential street committed to volunteering at the local soup kitchen, the soup kitchen would never be without help.  If one other person on every street committed to going door to door to collect materials for recycling, there would be less waste.  If another person on every residential street committed to volunteering to mentor a child through some kind of program (such as Big Brothers Big Sisters), the community would see a drastic decrease in many problem areas; vandalism, child abuse, children being victimized, school dropout rates, etc.  The list goes on and on.

People who actively participate in some kind of community service share their passion with the community.  They also have feelings of “ownership” of the community.  These feelings of ownership are crucial because we typically protect our belongings.  If individuals feel that they “own” the community, they are more likely to watch out for the best interest of the community as a whole.  Vandalism would be practically non-existent; who would want to vandalize their own belonging?

Community service also inspires people.  We’ve all seen the commercials on television where one person does a good deed and it inspires someone else to do a good deed, and that person inspires someone else, and so forth.  If I witness someone doing some type of community service, I will be inspired to exert myself as well.  I may not choose that exact type of service, but I will serve in a capacity that fits my own personal talents.  If all citizens did just one small thing, it would add up to something huge.

I believe one person can make a difference, and I believe if we are all committed to making the world a better place, it will become everything we dream it can be.  Get involved with your community.
